Vestige is a contemporary American restaurant in beautiful and historic downtown Ocean Springs, MS, locally-owned by Ocean Springs native Chef Alex Perry and his wife Kumi Omori.
Alex was recently recognized by James Beard Foundation as one of the Semi Finalists in The Best Chef: South category. (We are unbelievably humbled and super excited for this... SO THANKFUL for our hardworking team, especially our Sous Chef Carson!)
Our food is often inspired by flavors and techniques of Japan, where Alex's wife Kumi grew up. He finds it intriguing and delicious. He enjoys working with what grows here and turns them into tasty dishes that are his own interpretation of Japan. When we serve Southern staples or freshly baked bread it was probably Kumi cooking. She finds them fascinating as a transplant to the beautiful Gulf Coast.
Alex quotes "From a small village in northern Japan to a small town in south Mississippi, I can’t say either of us thought the machinations of the Universe would lead us here, but like Kambei and Shichirōji looking over the fields, we can reflect on the sacrifices we’ve made, but be proud of what we’ve accomplished, knowing we couldn’t have done it without the other."
We believe in seasonality, sustainability and locality whenever possible. These tenets allow us to create wholesome dishes that we feel good about serving and eating!
